There's something about this grumpy man that reminds Flat a lot of his Professor. And, perhaps, that's why he's been sticking around even after basically taking the extra coffee from him. It makes him feel like he's a little closer to home, even if that is not the case at all.
He takes a sip of the coffee, laughing as the man complains about the use of the formality. When asked to introduce himself, he's practically beaming with pride. "You can call me Flat! It's not really my name, but it's kind of like...a nickname?" He nods to himself, as if satisfied with the answer. "Yeah! My real name's ridiculously long, so it'd be a pain for you to say anyways."
And a whole other list of reasons why not to give his true name, but they don't need to get that far yet. He's just happy to have a conversation with someone! If he was a dog, you'd see him happily wagging his tail. "So, s--I mean, Hank, are you new here? Have you been here for a while?"
